HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Rufford Abbey, Nottinghamshire.
The site preserves the ruined nave arcades and other stone remains of the former Cistercian abbey church, incorporated into a later country house and its surrounding parkland, so much of what stands is fragmentary medieval fabric mixed with post-monastic rebuilding. It is managed by Nottinghamshire County Council as a country park. The grounds are freely accessible, with the abbey ruins and house viewable within the park.
About Rufford Abbey, Nottinghamshire
Cistercian monks founded Rufford Abbey in 1147 under the patronage of Gilbert de Gant as a daughter house of Rievaulx Abbey. The monastery held granges and sheep farms across Nottinghamshire, supporting itself through wool production for several centuries. It was dissolved in 1536 during Henry VIII's suppression of the monasteries and later converted into a country house.
