The monument honors Israel Putnam, a Continental major general who helped command American forces at Bunker Hill and later served in New York and the Hudson Highlands. His leadership and personal courage made him one of New England’s best-known Revolutionary soldiers.
Israel Putnam’s burial place remains beneath a prominent nineteenth-century monument in the South Cemetery at Brooklyn, Connecticut. The maintained sculptural memorial, inscriptions, grave plot, and surrounding historic burial ground provide the principal visible commemoration of the Revolutionary general and his resting place.
