Lord Cornwallis passed Prince George Courthouse on May 24, 1781, while moving toward the James River in pursuit of the Marquis de Lafayette. Cornwallis had marched north from the Carolinas and joined other British forces in Virginia, seeking to destroy American supplies and force Lafayette into battle. Lafayette, commanding a smaller Continental force, avoided a decisive engagement while shadowing the British. The courthouse stood on a road network connecting Petersburg, the James crossings, and the Virginia interior, so armies naturally used it as a landmark and transit point.
