About the Thirty Years War

The Thirty Years War (1618–1648) began with religious and political conflict in the Holy Roman Empire and expanded into a struggle involving major European powers. Catholic and Protestant divisions interacted with dynastic ambitions, and alliances did not consistently follow religious lines. The Peace of Westphalia ended the main conflict, adjusted territorial and constitutional arrangements, and confirmed important religious settlements.

Geography of the Thirty Years War

Most fighting occurred in the lands of the Holy Roman Empire, especially present-day Germany and the Czech Republic. Campaigns also extended into neighboring regions, including the Low Countries, northern Italy, and the Baltic area. Armies repeatedly crossed the Rhine, Elbe, and Danube corridors and contested fortified towns and productive countryside. Long occupation, disrupted harvests, disease, and the difficulty of supplying mobile armies devastated many central European communities.
