The castle's keep, curtain walls, towers, and great hall stand largely as reconstructed during a major early twentieth century restoration commissioned after centuries of ruin, rather than preserving original medieval fabric throughout. It is owned by the Département of Bas-Rhin, having previously belonged to the French state. The castle is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg
Regional lords first built Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg in the twelfth century to control trade routes through Alsace. It passed through several noble families over the following centuries and was damaged during the Thirty Years' War. Following centuries of decline, German Emperor Wilhelm II had it rebuilt between 1900 and 1908 as a monument to German medieval heritage.
