About the Greek War of Independence
The Greek War of Independence (1821–1829) was a revolt against Ottoman rule that developed into a struggle for an independent Greek state. Revolutionary forces faced Ottoman and Egyptian armies amid internal divisions and extensive civilian suffering. Intervention by Britain, France, and Russia helped secure the outcome, with formal recognition of independence following in 1830.
Geography of the Greek War of Independence
The main fighting occurred in the Peloponnese, central Greece, and the Aegean islands, with an early uprising also taking place in the Danubian principalities. Important centers included Athens, Tripolitsa, Missolonghi, and the naval waters around Navarino. Mountain strongholds and narrow land routes favored local resistance, while coastal towns and island fleets supported supply and movement. The arrival of Egyptian forces by sea made maritime control a central factor in the war.
