HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Frangokastello.

The rectangular Venetian fortress, with its corner towers and curtain walls, survives largely intact and in original masonry, standing alone near the shore. It is a protected archaeological site and monument under the Greek Ministry of Culture. The site is freely accessible to visitors in open ground.

About Frangokastello

Venetian rulers of Crete built the fortress of Frangokastello in 1371 to defend the island's southern coast against pirate raids and local uprisings. In 1828, Greek rebels under Hatzimichalis Dalianis made a last stand there against Ottoman Egyptian forces during the Greek War of Independence. The fortress became linked to local legends of ghostly warriors.
