About the Chinese Civil War
The Chinese Civil War (1927–1949) was an intermittent struggle between the Nationalist government led by the Kuomintang and the Chinese Communist Party for control of China. After a period of cooperation against Japan, full-scale fighting resumed, ending with the establishment of the People's Republic of China on the mainland and the Nationalist government's retreat to Taiwan.
Geography of the Chinese Civil War
Fighting ranged across mainland China, from Communist bases in the southern countryside to northern regions reached during the Long March. The decisive postwar campaigns centered on Manchuria, northern China, and the plains around the Huai River before Communist armies crossed the Yangtze and advanced south. Cities, railways, and river crossings were major strategic objectives. Taiwan became the Nationalist government's base after its withdrawal from the mainland.
