About Jinggangshan Revolutionary Sites, Jinggangshan

In October 1927, after the failed Autumn Harvest Uprising, Mao Zedong led his surviving troops into the Jinggang Mountains and set up the Chinese Communists' first rural revolutionary base. Zhu De's forces joined him in April 1928 to form the Fourth Red Army. The base shaped the guerrilla strategy the party followed through the civil war.

HISTORY HAPPENED HERE at Jinggangshan Revolutionary Sites, Jinggangshan

Jinggangshan became a decisive setting in the history of the Chinese Communist movement after the failure of urban uprisings in 1927. Mao Zedong led survivors of the Autumn Harvest Uprising toward this mountainous border region between Jiangxi and Hunan in October. Its steep terrain, limited roads, and traditions of local armed resistance offered protection from stronger Nationalist forces. Mao’s troops established themselves among existing local forces and began building political support in villages rather than relying on an immediate seizure of a major city.

The new base depended on an uneasy combination of military organization, land policy, taxation, and relationships with local communities. Communist cadres organized soviets, redistributed land, recruited peasants, and sought supplies while also confronting banditry and internal rivalry. In spring 1928 forces led by Zhu De and Chen Yi reached Jinggangshan and joined Mao’s troops. Their combined formation became an important predecessor of the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army, and the area is often described as the first major rural revolutionary base of the Chinese Communist Party.

Nationalist encirclement campaigns and shortages made the mountain base difficult to sustain. By early 1929 Mao and Zhu led the main Red Army units away toward southern Jiangxi, where a larger revolutionary territory later developed. Jinggangshan nevertheless supplied strategies that remained influential: mobile guerrilla warfare, rural base areas, political work within the army, and an alliance centered on poor peasants. Later Communist accounts turned these experiments into a foundational narrative, although decisions made at the time were contested, improvised, and costly for soldiers and civilians.

The surviving revolutionary sites are distributed across the mountain region rather than concentrated in one compound. They include former residences, meeting places, military positions, hospitals, workshops, and locations associated with battles and political organization. At Ciping, the Jinggangshan Revolutionary Museum was founded in 1959 to collect documents, weapons, photographs, maps, and personal objects. Zhu De provided its name inscription in 1962. Cemeteries and memorial halls added spaces for commemoration, while reconstructed buildings helped present the dispersed landscape as a connected historical route.

After 1949 Jinggangshan became a national symbol promoted through museums, school visits, political education, art, film, and organized “red tourism.” Conservation has preserved important places but has also shaped them through restoration and official interpretation. The sites are significant both for what occurred in 1927–29 and for the memory later built around those events. Reading the landscape historically requires attention to revolutionary ambition, local participation, coercion, hardship, and the retrospective construction of a heroic origin story for the People’s Republic of China.
