Anthony Wayne stationed American troops at Goode’s Bridge in July 1781 to block British movement southward and protect the region’s routes and supplies. The position formed part of Lafayette’s broader effort to shadow Cornwallis and contain the British army before it moved toward the Virginia peninsula and Yorktown.

The bridge crossed a route south of Richmond and offered Wayne a place to observe or impede British movement. His Pennsylvania Continentals had recently joined Lafayette after a difficult march. By holding crossings and shadowing roads, American forces limited Cornwallis’s freedom without risking a premature general battle. The position was one component of a distributed screen. Its value appears in the larger campaign that preserved American strength until allied armies and the French fleet created decisive superiority at Yorktown.

The narrative must therefore distinguish contemporary evidence from tradition and avoid placing every associated achievement on the marker’s footprint. At the same time, the location gives national history a local scale. It reveals the roads, institutions, households, labor systems, and communities through which military and political decisions took effect. Reading the marker critically preserves its genuine connection while acknowledging uncertainty, change, and the broader human consequences of revolution.
