Cornwallis’s British army passed Goochland Courthouse in 1781 while pursuing Lafayette across central Virginia. Cavalry under John Graves Simcoe also moved through on its way to raid Point of Fork. The courthouse stood beside an important north–south route used by British forces during the campaign preceding Yorktown.

Cornwallis pursued Lafayette after joining British forces in Virginia, hoping to force the smaller American army into battle. Courthouse roads provided recognizable junctions, supplies, and routes toward crossings. Simcoe’s Queen’s Rangers separated from the main body to strike Baron von Steuben’s stores at Point of Fork. Their passage through Goochland brought requisitions, intelligence gathering, and fear to the county. The courthouse marker denotes the line of march rather than a major engagement. It helps reconstruct how British columns navigated central Virginia before turning eastward.

This location was one stage in a campaign dependent on roads, bridges, ferries, animals, wagons, food, and local knowledge. Armies could cover impressive distances, but every march created traffic, exhaustion, breakdowns, and demands on civilians. A modern marker usually identifies the general route or camp area, not an unchanged eighteenth-century footprint. Later construction may have erased the tavern, farm, road alignment, or open fields known to the participants. The site’s value lies in showing how strategy became physical movement. Orders issued far away succeeded only when soldiers and supplies reached the required place at the required time. Such waypoints also reveal the Revolution’s impact on ordinary communities asked to provide forage, lodging, labor, and information. Seen within the full campaign, a seemingly brief stop could preserve an army, support an alliance, or help create the conditions for a later victory.

A marker may stand at a surviving building, an approximate camp, a grave, a changed road, or simply the best accessible point from which to understand a vanished place. Modern development and later reconstruction can obscure eighteenth-century geography, while commemorative inscriptions often compress long careers or complicated campaigns into a sentence. The narrative must therefore distinguish contemporary evidence from tradition and avoid placing every associated achievement on the marker’s footprint. At the same time, the location gives national history a local scale. It reveals the roads, institutions, households, labor systems, and communities through which military and political decisions took effect. Reading the marker critically preserves its genuine connection while acknowledging uncertainty, change, and the broader human consequences of revolution.
