HISTORIC PRESERVATION at George Wythe House.
The original eighteenth-century brick house survives within Colonial Williamsburg as a restored historic house museum. Furnished period rooms, preserved architectural fabric, reconstructed dependencies, gardens, archaeological resources, and surrounding streetscape interpret the household and the building’s civic and Revolutionary-era associations.

The house was the Williamsburg home of George Wythe, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and influential legal teacher. In September 1781, George Washington used it as his headquarters while preparing the allied movement to Yorktown. Rochambeau later occupied the house after Cornwallis’s surrender, making it an important command residence during the decisive campaign.
