About George Wythe House
The house was the Williamsburg home of George Wythe, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and influential legal teacher. In September 1781, George Washington used it as his headquarters while preparing the allied movement to Yorktown. Rochambeau later occupied the house after Cornwallis’s surrender, making it an important command residence during the decisive campaign.
Colonial Williamsburg preserves the original brick house, restored in 1938-1940 using architectural, archaeological, and documentary evidence. Lost outbuildings were reconstructed, and furnished rooms interpret the household without implying all displayed objects belonged to Wythe.
