HISTORIC PRESERVATION at George Washington Birthplace National Monument.
The Washington family’s original house no longer survives. The National Park Service preserves its archaeological foundation, burial ground, fields, waterways, livestock areas, and colonial landscape, together with a twentieth-century Memorial House, reconstructed dependencies, museum exhibits, trails, monuments, and visitor facilities.

George Washington was born at Popes Creek in 1732. Although the original house was gone before the Revolution, the landscape commemorates the origins of the Continental Army’s commander in chief. Washington led the American war effort from 1775 through victory and resigned his commission after peace in 1783.
