HISTORIC PRESERVATION at City of Verona Historic Centre.

The historic center preserves its Roman arena, medieval walls and bridges, Piazza delle Erbe and Piazza dei Signori with their surrounding palazzi, the Castelvecchio fortress, and numerous churches, forming a largely intact layered townscape of Roman, medieval, and Renaissance fabric. It is administered by the municipality of Verona as a World Heritage Site. The historic center is freely accessible as a living city, with individual monuments such as the arena and Castelvecchio open on a ticketed basis.

About City of Verona Historic Centre

Verona's historic center grew from a Roman city built around its forum, now Piazza delle Erbe, and flourished as a medieval commune. From 1262 the Della Scala family ruled the city, commissioning fortifications, bridges, and palaces that shaped its urban form. Verona became a major center of trade and courtly culture in northern Italy under their rule.
