HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Castello Scaligero.

The castle survives as a largely intact thirteenth century Scaliger fortress, with its crenellated curtain walls, corner towers, central keep, and fortified inner harbor and moat still standing essentially in their original form. It is state owned and administered by the Italian Ministry of Culture. The castle is open to the public on a ticketed basis.

About Castello Scaligero

The della Scala lords of Verona built this fortress in the thirteenth century to guard the entrance to the Sirmione peninsula on Lake Garda. Its moat could be flooded from the lake, and an enclosed harbor let galleys dock safely within the walls. The castle formed part of a wider Scaliger network controlling trade and military movement on the lake.
