Lafayette’s stone birthplace château survives in Chavaniac-Lafayette as a museum and memorial estate. Restored and furnished rooms, family collections, exhibitions, gardens, parkland, and preserved architectural fabric interpret his life within the maintained rural property where the historic residence remains the central feature.
About Chateau de Chavaniac
The Château de Chavaniac was the birthplace and childhood home of Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette. In 1777, Lafayette defied royal restrictions and sailed to America, where he became a Continental Army major general, a trusted associate of George Washington, and an advocate of the American cause. His service was especially important during the 1781 Virginia and Yorktown campaigns.
