Lambert Wickes became one of the Continental Navy's boldest early captains. Commanding the sloop Reprisal, he carried Benjamin Franklin to France in 1776, evaded British cruisers, and brought the American diplomatic mission safely to Europe. Wickes then led cruises against British merchant shipping in the English Channel and surrounding waters, demonstrating that the new nation could carry war close to Britain. International pressure eventually restricted his access to French ports. On October 1, 1777, Reprisal foundered in a storm near Newfoundland, and Wickes died with nearly all aboard.
