Nathanael Greene crossed the Dan River at Boyd’s and Irwin’s ferries in mid-February 1781, narrowly escaping Cornwallis. Edward Carrington had gathered boats to carry the American army across and deny immediate British pursuit. The successful crossing ended the Race to the Dan and preserved Greene’s force for Guilford Courthouse.

Greene’s quartermaster Edward Carrington collected boats and placed them at the Dan crossings, anticipating the final stage of retreat. Light troops under Otho Williams delayed Cornwallis while the main army moved north. The last Americans crossed shortly before the British arrived, and the boats were kept beyond their reach. The operation demonstrated planning, intelligence, and logistical foresight. Greene soon returned from Virginia with reinforcements and resumed the campaign culminating at Guilford Courthouse.

The location also demonstrates how national events depended upon local roads, institutions, labor, material resources, and people whose experiences are only partially preserved in surviving records.
