About Battle of Clapp's Mill Marker

On March 2, 1781, American light troops under Otho Williams fought Cornwallis’s advance near Clapp’s Mill. The delaying action screened Nathanael Greene’s movements and formed part of the maneuvering before Guilford Courthouse.

HISTORY HAPPENED HERE at Battle of Clapp's Mill Marker

The Battle of Clapp's Mill was fought on March 2, 1781, in the Alamance County countryside during the maneuvering that preceded Guilford Courthouse. Lord Cornwallis had crossed back into North Carolina after failing to destroy Nathanael Greene's army during the Race to the Dan. Greene, reinforced and again south of the river, used light troops to watch the British, protect his main force, and learn whether Cornwallis would advance or withdraw.

The American covering force was directed by Colonel Otho Holland Williams and included cavalry and infantry associated with William Washington, Henry Lee, and experienced riflemen. Near Clapp's Mill on Beaver Creek, Williams prepared an ambush along the road. The ground offered concealment, but the plan depended on discipline and a timely withdrawal. British troops approaching the position included advance elements of Cornwallis's army, with Banastre Tarleton's mounted force operating in the screen.

When the British entered the trap, the Americans delivered a close volley and briefly checked the advance. Cornwallis quickly brought forward additional infantry and artillery, turning the encounter against the smaller detachment. Under heavy fire, Williams ordered a retreat. The withdrawal became confused in places, and American troops suffered casualties while escaping across difficult ground. The British held the field, but the covering force avoided destruction and continued to serve Greene's larger operational purpose.

Clapp's Mill was a sharp delaying action rather than a decisive standalone battle. Its importance comes from the campaign around it. Greene repeatedly risked light troops to gather intelligence and slow Cornwallis while preserving the Continental army for favorable circumstances. Less than two weeks later, on March 15, the armies met at Guilford Courthouse. Cornwallis won possession of that battlefield but suffered losses he could not readily replace, contributing to his decision to move toward Wilmington.

The marker's wording emphasizes Henry Lee and Tarleton, two famous cavalry commanders, but the engagement involved a broader combined force and is often described through Williams's command. Such compression is common in roadside interpretation: a few recognizable names stand in for several units, officers, and phases of action. The location also survives mainly as a rural landscape rather than a field filled with monumental architecture, so terrain and roads remain crucial evidence.

Remembering Clapp's Mill shows how the Southern Campaign was shaped by reconnaissance, ambush, pursuit, and calculated retreat as much as by major set-piece battles. The Americans did not need to hold every patch of ground to gain a strategic advantage. By screening Greene's army and forcing Cornwallis to deploy, the troops at the mill contributed to the exhausting sequence that weakened British power in the Carolinas. The site preserves one episode in that larger contest of movement, intelligence, and endurance.
