About Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls (traditional tomb)
The Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls stands over the traditional burial place of the apostle Paul.
The Holy See maintains the basilica as an active place of worship and pilgrimage. Its present fabric reflects rebuilding after the 1823 fire as well as earlier remains.
History happened here at Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls (traditional tomb)
Christian tradition places Paul’s burial along the Ostian Way outside Rome’s ancient walls. The basilica developed at that site and was enlarged in late antiquity.
A viewing opening beneath the papal altar now allows visitors to see the sarcophagus traditionally identified as Paul’s tomb. The identification remains a matter of historical and religious tradition.
