In March 1781, Cornwallis's army seized use of the mill associated with this site while marching toward Guilford Courthouse. Mills were indispensable military resources because grain had to be ground into meal before it could feed soldiers efficiently. British troops moving rapidly through North Carolina depended on requisition, seizure, and local facilities after Cornwallis reduced his baggage train. Taking over the mill supplied immediate needs but disrupted civilian production and exposed residents to uncompensated losses. The episode illustrates the logistical strain behind the campaign that culminated at Guilford Courthouse on March 15.
