Little standing fabric survives at Actium itself, the site of the naval battle between Octavian and Mark Antony, beyond scattered foundations in open ground near the strait, while the associated victory monument and the city of Nicopolis, built nearby by Augustus, preserve more substantial ruins including a trophy platform and a theater. The area falls under the protection of the Greek Ministry of Culture. The battlefield ground is freely accessible, while the Nicopolis ruins are open to visitors on a ticketed basis.

The waters off Actium were the site of a major naval battle in 31 BCE between the fleets of Octavian and the combined forces of Mark Antony and Cleopatra. Octavian's decisive victory ended the Roman civil wars and eliminated his last rivals for power. The battle paved the way for Octavian's rise as Augustus, Rome's first emperor.
