Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, husband of Elizabeth II, served in the Royal Navy in World War II and was the longest-serving consort in British history, founding the Duke of Edinburgh's Award. In 1939 he entered the Royal Naval College at Dartmouth. He married Princess Elizabeth on November 20, 1947, and was created Duke of Edinburgh. Philip founded the Duke of Edinburgh's Award in 1956 and served as president of the World Wildlife Fund.

EARLY LIFE

Philip was born on June 10, 1921, at Mon Repos on the island of Corfu, Greece, the only son of Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and Princess Alice of Battenberg. After a revolutionary court condemned his father following the Greco-Turkish War, the family was evacuated from Greece in 1922 aboard a British warship, with Philip carried in a fruit box. He grew up mainly in France and Britain, attending Cheam School in England and briefly Schule Schloss Salem in Germany. He then studied at Gordonstoun in Scotland under its founder, Kurt Hahn. In 1939 he entered the Royal Naval College at Dartmouth.

Philip, duke of Edinburgh, began his professional life in the Royal Navy in 1939. During the Second World War he served in the Mediterranean and Pacific, including aboard HMS Valiant at Cape Matapan and HMS Whelp during the final operations against Japan. After the war he continued naval service, becoming first lieutenant of HMS Chequers and commanding HMS Magpie. He left active service in July 1951 as Princess Elizabeth's royal responsibilities increased.

Elizabeth's accession in 1952 made him consort to the sovereign. His work involved accompanying her on state visits and Commonwealth tours, receiving visiting leaders and representing the monarchy at ceremonies. He also maintained his own programme of engagements and took responsibilities for royal estates. The role provided no independent constitutional authority, but offered a platform for sustained involvement with public institutions and voluntary organizations.

In 1956 he founded the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, developed with Kurt Hahn and initially administered by John Hunt. Its combination of service, physical activity, skills and expeditions encouraged learning beyond the classroom. Beginning with boys and later including girls, it spread internationally through schools and youth organizations. Philip remained involved in recognizing participants' achievements and meeting the volunteers who supported the scheme.

Conservation was another major interest. He became president of the World Wildlife Fund's British branch in 1961 and later international president, serving in that role from 1981 to 1996. He promoted scientific and industrial work, held university chancellorships and established Commonwealth Study Conferences bringing together people concerned with industry and community life. His public career combined ceremonial duties with advocacy and patronage across many institutions. He retired from public engagements in 2017, after decades of service alongside the Queen, and died in 2021.

CAREER

DEATH

Philip died of "old age" on the morning of 9 April 2021 at Windsor Castle, aged 99. According to biographer Hugo Vickers, he had been suffering from inoperable pancreatic cancer since 2013. He was the longest-serving royal consort in world history. Elizabeth was reported, through her son Andrew, to have said that Philip's death had "left a huge void in her life". The usual public ceremonial could not take place because COVID-19 regulations restricted the number of mourners to 30; it was later reported that Elizabeth had rejected a government offer to relax the rules. The funeral took place on 17 April 2021 at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle, and Philip was temporarily interred alongside 25 other coffins, including that of George III, in the Royal Vault inside St George's. Representatives of countries around the world sent condolences to the royal family upon his death. As with other senior members of the royal family, Philip's last will and testament will be sealed for at least 90 years, according to a High Court ruling that deemed it necessary to protect the Sovereign's "dignity and standing". This led to speculation that the will might contain material harmful to the reputation of the royal family. The order was made by the President of the Family Division after a private hearing in July 2021; he said that he had neither seen the will nor been informed of any of its contents. In July 2022, the Court of Appeal dismissed the newspaper's arguments, stating that the press could not have been informed of the hearing "without risking the media storm that was feared".
