Henriette Anne Louise d’Aguesseau was born on February 12, 1737, in France, the daughter of Jean-Baptiste Paulin d’Aguesseau and Anne Louise Françoise du Pré. She descended from a distinguished family of magistrates and royal officials; her grandfather Henri François d’Aguesseau served as chancellor of France and was celebrated for legal learning and integrity. Henriette grew up within the educated French nobility. Her upbringing emphasized Catholic devotion, reading, writing, music, household administration, and the refined manners required at court. The d’Aguesseau tradition also valued law, scholarship, and public duty more strongly than mere display. Detailed records of her individual tutors are limited, but her later correspondence and family influence reveal substantial education. In 1755 she married Jean Louis Paul François de Noailles, Duke of Ayen and later Duke of Noailles. The marriage joined the magistrate nobility to one of France’s most powerful military and court families. Henriette managed a large aristocratic household and became mother to several daughters, including Adrienne de Noailles, the future wife of the Marquis de Lafayette. At the Noailles residences, Henriette supervised her daughters’ religious and social formation. Court life brought privilege but also rigid expectations, strategic marriages, and frequent absences of men in military service. She encouraged family cohesion and Catholic charity. Before the American and French revolutions brought danger to the Noailles family, Henriette had been shaped by legal-aristocratic heritage, elite education, marriage, motherhood, and court responsibility. Her early life prepared her to navigate both ceremony and crisis. During the Terror, her name and family connections became liabilities, and she was executed in 1794 alongside relatives. That fate makes the security of her privileged upbringing appear tragically temporary.
