Hannah Ayscough Newton Smith was Isaac Newton’s mother. Widowed before his birth, she later married the Reverend Barnabas Smith and had three children with him.

EARLY LIFE

Hannah was a daughter of James Ayscough of Market Overton, Rutland. Her precise birth date is not securely established in the cited records.

After her second husband’s death, Hannah returned to the Woolsthorpe area and remained involved in the family estate. No separate paid occupation is established.

CAREER

DEATH

Hannah died at Stamford in 1679 and was buried at St John the Baptist Church, Colsterworth. A later draft memoir gives 1689, but the Newton Project chronology and the church history place her death and burial in 1679.
