Domenico Colombo
Domenico Colombo was a Genoese wool worker and merchant, and the father of Christopher Columbus. Archival studies identify his wife as Susanna Fontanarossa and document family moves between Genoa and Savona.
EARLY LIFE
A Library of Congress research collection summarizes Genoese records of Domenico’s apprenticeship as a wool weaver in 1429. No secure birth date is established there.
Domenico worked in the wool trade and also kept a tavern. Financial and property records place him in Genoa and later Savona.
CAREER
DEATH
Domenico Colombo was still alive on November 30, 1494, when a Genoese document described him as a former wool weaver. A document of April 8, 1500 named his children as heirs, establishing that he had died by then. Treccani says his exact death date, cause, and burial place are unknown.
