Atia was Augustus’s mother and a niece of Julius Caesar through her mother Julia. After Gaius Octavius died, she married Lucius Marcius Philippus.

EARLY LIFE

Her connection with the Julian family linked the young Augustus to his great-uncle Julius Caesar.

CAREER

DEATH

Atia died in 43 BCE during the first consulship of her son Octavian, later the emperor Augustus. Suetonius records that he honored her after her death; the Oxford Classical Dictionary identifies this as a public funeral. The surviving accounts do not specify her cause of death or burial place.
