The Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral survives as an underground church carved directly into the salt deposits of a former salt mine, with its naves, stations, and salt sculptures intact as excavated rather than built or reconstructed forms. It is administered by a state-associated cultural park authority. It is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral
The Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral was carved inside a salt mine north of Bogotá worked since pre-Columbian Muisca times. Miners built an underground chapel there in 1954, later replaced by a larger cathedral excavated deeper in the mine in the 1990s. It served the mining community as a place of worship and a symbol of the industry that sustained them.
