HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Zinder Sultan's Palace & Old City (Birni).

The Sultan's Palace survives as a banco, or mud brick, structure with decorated facades in the Hausa architectural style, standing within the old walled quarter of Zinder known as the Birni, which retains sections of courtyard houses and narrow lanes. It remains linked to the Sultanate of Zinder and falls under local and national heritage authorities rather than a single named custodian. Public access is generally limited to viewing the exteriors, with entry to the palace interior restricted.

About Zinder Sultan's Palace & Old City (Birni)

The Birni, the old walled city of Zinder, was built as the capital of the Sultanate of Damagaram, a Hausa state that rose to prominence during the eighteenth century. Its palace served as the seat of the sultan, enclosed within the city's fortified walls. Zinder later grew into a trans-Saharan trade center before coming under French colonial rule.
