Ysleta Mission has served, almost without interruption, as the everyday worship center of the Tigua (Ysleta del Sur Pueblo) community since Tigua refugees and Spanish colonists fleeing the 1680 Pueblo Revolt established it, with a permanent adobe church completed in 1682. For nearly 350 years it functioned as the parish anchor of daily and seasonal religious life for the Tigua and later a broader mestizo El Paso Valley community: baptisms, marriages, funerals, and Sunday Mass tied residents to the church across generations. Rio Grande flooding, especially in the 1740s and again in 1829, repeatedly damaged or destroyed the structure and forced relocations and rebuilding, so the church standing today is a later reconstruction rather than the original 1682 building. From 1918 to 2005, an adjoining mission school educated Tigua children, extending the site's everyday role beyond worship into schooling. Administration passed through several religious orders and dioceses over time, with Franciscan friars overseeing the parish since 1992. Today Ysleta Mission remains an active Roman Catholic parish of the Diocese of El Paso, considered the oldest continuously functioning parish in Texas; a larger 1960s-era church building next door handles regular weekly Masses, while the historic mission itself is used for special occasions such as weddings and baptisms and remains open to visitors and pilgrims. An annual mission festival each July helps fund its upkeep, and the Tigua community continues to treat the site as a living center of parish and cultural life rather than a purely historical relic.
