HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Yagul Archaeological Zone.
The site preserves extensive stone terracing, a ballcourt, tombs, and hilltop fortress structures cut into and built upon the rock, with much of the standing masonry consolidated rather than fully original. It is administered by Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia as a protected archaeological zone. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis as ruins set in open ground.
About Yagul Archaeological Zone
Yagul developed as a Zapotec hilltop settlement in the Oaxaca Valley, reaching its height after the decline of Monte Albán, in the tenth through twelfth centuries. Its fortified acropolis included a ballcourt, a palace complex, and elaborate tombs cut into the surrounding hillside. The site served as a political center during the post-classic reorganization of the region.
