HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Xochitécatl Archaeological Zone.
The ceremonial center preserves several earthen and stone pyramidal structures, including the Pyramid of the Flowers, the spiral-form Basamento de la Espiral, and the Pyramid of the Volcano, standing as excavated and partially consolidated ruins on a hilltop. It is administered by Mexico's Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia as a protected archaeological zone. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Xochitécatl Archaeological Zone
Xochitécatl was built as a ceremonial center by early Mesoamerican peoples, with construction spanning the Preclassic through Classic periods. Its temples and the spiral shaped Pyramid of the Flower point to rituals connected with fertility and water, and offerings of women and children have been found there. The site was closely linked with the center of Cacaxtla.
