HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site.

The prison complex preserves its original sandstone cell blocks, exterior walls, and several ancillary structures from its territorial-era construction, with some interior spaces refurnished for interpretation rather than original fittings. It is operated as a Wyoming State Historic Site by the Wyoming State Parks and Cultural Resources division. The site is open to the public on a ticketed, seasonal basis with self-guided and guided access to the cell blocks and grounds.

About Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site

The Wyoming Territorial Prison was built in 1872 in Laramie to hold convicted felons under territorial and later state law. Its inmates included the outlaw Butch Cassidy, incarcerated there in the 1890s, and it also briefly housed a women's ward. After the prison closed in 1903, the University of Wyoming used the grounds as an experimental stock farm.
