About Wye Plantation Marker
Wye Plantation was the home and burial place of William Paca, a Maryland delegate who signed the Declaration of Independence. Paca also helped frame Maryland’s state government and served as governor during and after the war. The estate is associated with his political leadership rather than a documented military action.
HISTORY HAPPENED HERE at Wye Plantation Marker
Wye Plantation became the final home and burial place of William Paca, a Maryland lawyer, revolutionary statesman, and signer of the Declaration of Independence. Paca opposed parliamentary taxation, helped organize resistance through Maryland's committees and conventions, and represented the colony in the Continental Congress. After independence he served as Maryland's governor and later as a federal judge. He acquired an interest in the Wye property on the Eastern Shore and died there in 1799. The plantation's wealth depended on enslaved labor, an essential part of its history and of the contradiction between revolutionary language about liberty and the social order maintained by many leading Patriots. The surviving landscape therefore connects political independence, elite agriculture, slavery, and remembrance.
This place broadens the history of the revolutionary era beyond campaigns and political declarations. Armies and governments depended on farms, furnaces, mills, roads, coerced labor, skilled crafts, and Atlantic commerce. Industrial and agricultural landscapes supplied material power while reproducing deep inequalities. The site's physical remains allow those economic systems—and the people who worked within them—to be read as part of the history of independence.
The marker fixes this history to a surviving point in the modern landscape. Although roads, shorelines, buildings, and political boundaries have changed, standing near the recorded location makes the distances and terrain of the episode more intelligible. It also invites comparison between concise commemorative wording and the more complicated historical record, in which strategy, personal choice, civilian experience, and later memory all shaped the meaning of the place. Its significance comes from the way a specific local place preserves evidence of the larger struggles that created the United States. Reading the event at landscape scale clarifies the practical decisions, risks, and human consequences that a short date or marker inscription can only summarize.
