HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Wroxeter Roman City, Shropshire.

The site preserves the excavated ground plan of the Roman city of Viroconium, including the foundations of the forum and market hall, together with the Old Work, a substantial standing fragment of the municipal baths basilica wall that ranks among the largest exposed Roman masonry in Britain. It is managed by English Heritage as a scheduled monument. The site is open to the public on a ticketed basis, with an on-site museum displaying finds from the excavations.

About Wroxeter Roman City, Shropshire

Wroxeter began as a Roman legionary fortress in the first century CE, guarding a crossing of the River Severn. It later became Viroconium Cornoviorum, civitas capital of the Cornovii tribe, complete with a forum, baths, and market buildings. As the fourth-largest town in Roman Britain, it served as a major administrative and trading center for the region.
