The cathedral preserves its Norman crypt, chapter house, and cloisters alongside a later Gothic nave and choir, and houses the tomb of King John and the chantry chapel of Prince Arthur. It is maintained by the Dean and Chapter of Worcester Cathedral as a Church of England cathedral and Grade I listed building. It remains an active place of worship, freely open to visitors.

Bishop Wulfstan began rebuilding Worcester Cathedral in 1084 on the site of an earlier Anglo-Saxon church, attaching it to a Benedictine priory. It became the burial place of King John of England and of Prince Arthur, elder brother of Henry VIII. As a monastic cathedral it served as a center of worship, learning, and pilgrimage.
