Little of the medieval Woodstock Palace survives above ground, with the site reduced to buried foundations and earthworks within Blenheim Park, the standing palace having been demolished, and the park today containing the later Blenheim Palace and landscaped grounds rather than the original medieval structure. The park and its grounds are managed by the Blenheim Estate, part of which is a World Heritage Site. Public access is available to the park grounds on a ticketed or membership basis, with the historic palace site itself unmarked ground.
About Woodstock Palace Site (Blenheim Park), Oxfordshire
Woodstock Palace was a royal residence and hunting lodge used by English monarchs from the twelfth century, including Henry II, who reportedly kept his mistress Rosamund Clifford there. It later held the young Princess Elizabeth under house arrest in the 1550s before she became queen. In the eighteenth century, Blenheim Palace was built on the same grounds.
