HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Winchester Mystery House.

The rambling Queen Anne-style mansion survives with its maze of staircases, doors leading nowhere, and other idiosyncratic architectural features largely as built, though some sections were damaged by an earthquake and never fully repaired. The house is privately owned and operated as a tourist attraction, designated a California Historical Landmark. It is open to the public only through ticketed guided tours.

About Winchester Mystery House

Sarah Winchester, widow of the Winchester rifle fortune heir, began building this Victorian mansion in San Jose in 1884. Construction continued without pause until her death in 1922, producing a rambling maze of staircases and passages. Legend claimed she built to appease spirits killed by Winchester rifles, an unverified story that made the house famous for its eccentricity.
