The original eighteenth-century powder magazine survives in Colonial Williamsburg. Its restored octagonal building and enclosing wall are interpreted with military stores and weapons displays.

The Williamsburg Magazine stored arms, ammunition, and military equipment. In April 1775, Governor Dunmore’s removal of gunpowder provoked the Gunpowder Incident and Patrick Henry’s militia march. The building became a focal point in Virginia’s transition from protest to armed resistance.
