The White Tower survives as a cylindrical stone fortress tower, the last major standing remnant of Thessaloniki's Ottoman era sea walls, which were otherwise demolished. It is owned by the Greek state and managed by the Ministry of Culture as a museum. The tower is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About White Tower
The White Tower was built in the fifteenth century as part of Thessaloniki's Ottoman-era fortifications, guarding the eastern end of the city's harbor. It later served as a garrison and prison, gaining a grim reputation after a nineteenth-century massacre of prisoners there. It stood as a symbol of Ottoman military power over the city for centuries.
