Westport House survives as a largely intact eighteenth century country house with its historic rooms, staircase, and grounds retained, though some interior features and outbuildings have been altered or removed over time. It has been under private ownership historically associated with the Browne family, Marquesses of Sligo. It is open to the public on a ticketed basis.
About Westport House
Westport House was built in the eighteenth century for the Browne family, later Marquesses of Sligo, on a site associated with a stronghold of the seafaring chieftain Grace O'Malley. Its Palladian design is attributed chiefly to architect Richard Cassels, with later additions by other architects. It served as the center of a large landed estate in County Mayo.
