West Lake lies immediately west of Hangzhou, bordered by wooded hills on three sides and the city on the fourth. Its celebrated appearance combines natural water and topography with centuries of dredging, planting, building, naming, and artistic interpretation. Writers and artists praised the area by the Tang dynasty, and its cultural importance deepened when Hangzhou became a major center of southern China. The lake was never merely scenery: it supported water management, transport, religious practice, agriculture, recreation, and urban identity.

Governors and local communities repeatedly dredged the lake to prevent silting and used the spoil to create or strengthen causeways and islands. The Bai and Su causeways became associated with poet-officials Bai Juyi and Su Shi, although their present forms reflect later rebuilding. Temples, pagodas, gardens, bridges, pavilions, and ornamental trees framed selected views. Buddhist institutions, including Lingyin Temple and sites connected with the legend of the White Snake and other traditions, gave the landscape sacred and literary dimensions.

Hangzhou served as the capital of the Southern Song dynasty from 1127 to 1279. Court culture, commerce, printing, scholarship, and urban growth made the lake famous across the empire. By the thirteenth century, a canon of Ten Scenic Views gave poetic names to particular combinations of season, weather, sound, architecture, and terrain. These views encouraged people to experience the landscape as a sequence of composed pictures. Later dynasties restored monuments, added inscriptions, and repeated the model in gardens elsewhere in China.

West Lake influenced designed landscapes in Japan and Korea as well as China. Yet its history also includes warfare, neglect, silt, altered shorelines, reconstruction, and modern urban pressure. Pagodas and pavilions have often been rebuilt, and today’s plantings and paths reflect successive conservation campaigns. Twentieth- and twenty-first-century Hangzhou expanded into a metropolis whose towers dominate views to the east. Regulations, traffic controls, water-quality programs, visitor management, and limits on building height seek to protect the visual relationship between lake, hills, monuments, and city.

UNESCO inscribed the West Lake Cultural Landscape of Hangzhou in 2011. Its significance rests less on the age of every structure than on the continuing cultural practice of shaping nature into meaningful vistas. Two causeways, three artificial islands, temples, gardens, and the surrounding ridgelines remain legible as a unified composition. Authenticity therefore involves views, names, movement, vegetation, water, and artistic memory as well as masonry. The lake is both historic artifact and active public landscape, continually maintained and reinterpreted by the city around it.
