About West Haven Green

West Haven Green forms part of the landscape of the British raid on New Haven on July 5, 1779. Its memorials recall local deaths and British adjutant William Campbell’s protection of Reverend Noah Williston. The surviving civic green has a longer history of worship, burial, and community gatherings.

The Green remains a public civic landscape surrounded by historical buildings. Churches, monuments, and landscaping reflect successive periods rather than an unchanged Revolutionary scene. Campbell’s separate grave memorial in Allingtown and the British landing at Bradley Point are different locations within the wider raid landscape.

History happened here at West Haven Green

British forces landed on the West Haven shore on July 5, 1779, during a raid against New Haven. Fighting and movement through the settlement brought the war into a landscape of homes, churches, and community spaces. The Green’s National Register documentation associates it with the raid and with memorials to people affected by it.

Local commemoration gives particular attention to William Campbell, a British officer remembered for protecting Reverend Noah Williston. Other memorials record the raid’s violence and local losses. These associations make the Green a place to consider both military action and encounters involving civilians. Later church construction and memorial work changed its appearance, while retaining its role as a community gathering place.
