HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Webb House Museum.
The original 1750s Joseph Webb House survives as a furnished museum within the Webb-Deane-Stevens complex. Restored period rooms, collections, gardens, preserved architectural fabric, and adjoining historic houses are maintained by Connecticut’s Colonial Dames and interpreted through guided tours and educational programs.
About Webb House Museum
Joseph Webb Jr.’s house became an important headquarters during the decisive 1781 campaign. George Washington and the comte de Rochambeau met here in May 1781 to discuss combined American-French strategy. Initially considering an attack on British-held New York, the allied commanders later marched south and trapped Cornwallis at Yorktown. Washington again stayed at the house during the army’s movement through Connecticut.
HISTORY HAPPENED HERE at Webb House Museum
The house's fame stems from George Washington's five night stay there, where he planned the Siege of Yorktown with French general Comte de Rochambeau. Smithsonian magazine writer Howard Hugh suggests that the red wool flock wallpaper in the bedchamber where Washington slept was hung in anticipation of the general's arrival.
Webb sold the house in 1790 and it passed through different owners until it was purchased by Judge Martin Welles around 1820.
