HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Waverley Abbey, Surrey.

Only fragmentary ruins of the first Cistercian abbey built in England survive, including sections of the refectory wall, vaulted undercroft, and lower walls of the church and cloister buildings, most of the site having been quarried away or lost after its dissolution. The ruins are held in guardianship by English Heritage on private estate land. They lie in open ground and are freely accessible to visitors.

About Waverley Abbey, Surrey

Waverley Abbey was founded in 1128 by William Giffard, Bishop of Winchester, as the first Cistercian monastery established in England. Monks farmed the surrounding Surrey countryside and the abbey grew into an influential center of the Cistercian order before its suppression under Henry VIII in 1536. It played a formative role in bringing Cistercian monasticism to England.
