VISITOR INFORMATION

The state marker stands about three and a half miles from the plantation. Do not confuse this engagement with Buford's May 1780 defeat, also called the Battle of the Waxhaws. Map point reviewed October 3, 2026: Visitor reference is state highway marker L-94, located using the official NC Highway Historical Markers GIS point. Its text places Wauchope’s plantation three and a half miles northwest. This pin represents the roadside marker, not the plantation or Buford’s separate May 1780 battlefield. Visitor information reviewed October 3, 2026: The marker is a nearby interpretive reference, not the plantation footprint. Safe roadside stopping and public access to the plantation are unverified; do not enter private land.

Visitor amenities reviewed October 3, 2026: No confirmed information was found for visitor parking and public restrooms. The NO entries reflect unverified provision, rather than confirmed absence. Check locally before relying on facilities.

About Wauchope’s Plantation Site (Davie’s Attack)

Wauchope’s Plantation was the setting of William R. Davie’s attack on Loyalist militia on September 21, 1780. The engagement preceded the Battle of Charlotte during Cornwallis’s advance. State marker L-94 interprets the action from a roadside location separate from the plantation itself.

DNCR locates Davie's Attack marker L-94 on NC 200 and places Wauchope's plantation 3.5 miles northwest. The house now identified with the site dates to 1869. The sign and later house are distinct from the 1780 plantation buildings. Original remains, site boundaries, protection and current marker care still need verification.

History happened here at Wauchope’s Plantation Site (Davie’s Attack)

Following Camden, Cornwallis sought to raise Loyalist support while advancing into North Carolina. Illness slowed his column in the Waxhaws. Davie attacked a body of Loyalist militia at James Wauchope’s Plantation on September 21, 1780, dispersing the force before the larger confrontation at Charlotte five days later.

Later accounts sometimes connect the action with Tarleton’s cavalry, but the state’s review distinguishes the attacked militia from Tarleton’s force. The name Battle of the Waxhaws can also cause confusion with the May 1780 attack on Buford’s troops. Documentary comparison is essential to keeping these different engagements and locations separate.
