Washington stayed on June 3 at the home of Dudley Gatewood, which stood about one mile northeast of the marker. The house does not survive at this roadside location, and the visit occurred eight years after the formal end of the Revolution. Its importance lies in Washington’s effort as president to bind the former colonies into a functioning union.

Washington began the Southern Tour in April 1791. He had already visited the northern states and now traveled through Virginia, the Carolinas, and Georgia, the states he had not toured as president. The journey allowed him to observe roads, ports, agriculture, commerce, and public sentiment firsthand. It also made the new federal government visible in communities that experienced national politics mostly through newspapers, tax collectors, and distant legislation.

The tour carried powerful Revolutionary symbolism. Washington traveled not as the commander in chief of an army but as the elected head of a constitutional government. Public receptions celebrated his military leadership and the achievement of independence, while he emphasized national unity rather than regional faction. He met officials, veterans, clergy, merchants, planters, and ordinary residents. Ceremonies, dinners, militia escorts, and addresses created a shared public language around the new republic.

By early June, Washington was returning north. His route through North Carolina included Salem, Guilford Courthouse, and other communities whose landscapes recalled the southern campaigns. On June 3 he reached Dudley Gatewood’s home in Caswell County. The surviving documentary record does not support an elaborate account of what occurred inside the house. It is safest to understand the stop as one of the practical overnight accommodations required during a long journey by carriage and horseback.

The next day Washington crossed toward Virginia, ending the North Carolina portion of his tour. The marker calls this the last stop, meaning his final overnight lodging in the state, not the last event of the entire Southern Tour. Washington continued homeward after months of travel.

No Revolutionary battle or wartime council is documented at the Gatewood home. Its historical value is postwar and political. The president’s presence demonstrated continuity between the struggle for independence and the experiment in representative government that followed. The marker also illustrates how national history touched private households and rural roads. For one night, a Caswell County residence became part of Washington’s deliberate effort to know the country, receive its citizens, and strengthen attachment to the union created after the Revolution.
