About Washington County
Delegates convened at Washington-on-the-Brazos from March 1 to 17, 1836, to draft and sign the Texas Declaration of Independence from Mexico. The convention, including Sam Houston and Lorenzo de Zavala among its delegates, also framed the constitution of the new Republic of Texas. The gathering made the site the birthplace of Texan independence.
