The town preserves substantial stretches of its Etruscan and medieval walls, the Etruscan Porta all'Arco gate, and a medieval civic center of piazzas and towers, alongside the Museo Guarnacci's collection of Etruscan cinerary urns and artifacts. The town is administered by the municipality of Volterra, with the museum operated as a civic institution. The streets are freely accessible, while the museum requires a paid ticket.

About Volterra Historic Town & Etruscan Museum

Volterra developed as one of the twelve city-states of the Etruscan League, with settlement on the site dating back to around the eighth century BCE. Known to the Etruscans as Velathri, the city grew wealthy through metalworking, agriculture, and the local alabaster trade. It later became the Roman municipium of Volaterrae, maintaining significant autonomy within the Roman system.
