HISTORIC PRESERVATION at Vizcaya Bridge.
The wrought iron tower and cable structure of the bridge are original to the 1890s construction, though the passenger gondola has been rebuilt more than once. It is operated under the auspices of the provincial authorities of Biscay and is designated a World Heritage Site. The bridge remains in daily operation, carrying pedestrians and vehicles across the estuary on its suspended gondola and via an elevated walkway open to visitors.
About Vizcaya Bridge
The Vizcaya Bridge was built in 1893 to the design of engineer Alberto de Palacio, spanning the estuary between Portugalete and Las Arenas near Bilbao. As the world's first transporter bridge, it carried passengers and vehicles across on a suspended gondola without obstructing the shipping channel below. It served the growing industrial and commuter traffic of the Bilbao area.
